It’s about that time. Time to find the perfect pumpkin and carve it into the perfect jack-o’-lantern. Here are some tricks of the trade to picking the perfect pumpkin.
- Find a pumpkin in a shape that you like. It’s a good idea to know the design you are going to carve beforehand.
- A ripe pumpkin should be completely orange and have a hard shell that does not dent or scratch easily.
- Check for bruises. If the pumpkin has any bruises or soft spots, it will rot faster.
- Make sure your pumpkin has a flat sitting place. Some pumpkins don’t “sit” well, and therefore they don’t make very good jack-o’-lanterns.
- Once you find your perfect pumpkin, do not carry it by the stem. If the stem breaks off, the pumpkin will rot quickly.
- As fun as it is to carve your pumpkin, you should wait to carve it until Halloween is only a few days away. This will ensure that your jack-o’-lantern will last through Halloween.
